According to team principal Andrea Stella, the new car shows substantial improvements since the final Grand Prix of 2024. "Every fundamental component of the layout has undergone innovation," he explains. "Whether it's for a direct performance gain or to unlock more potential for future development, almost everything—from the front wing to the rear structure—has seen change. Some improvements are incremental, others more substantial."
Lando Norris, too, has high hopes for the MCL-39, noting, "You're always a bit nervous when you try something new, wondering if everything will come together perfectly."
So what is new on the MCL-39 exactly?
One of the most notable updates is the increased anti-dive system, which reduces the car's movement during braking. This improvement allows the team to brake later into corners while maintaining greater stability during both braking and turning.
The rear wing design is another key update. It's described as "pointy," a trait reminiscent of the 2024 Abu Dhabi-specific rear wing. Many believe this will lead to greater rear downforce, offering the car more grip and control.
On the side, the new side pod inlets are a standout feature. While unique, they bear a resemblance to last year's Mercedes "P" shape side pods. This design change also includes alterations to the top inlet, which is now more oval-shaped compared to the MCL-38. This oval form is likely an effort to lower the car's center of gravity while also reducing weight. The stronger oval shape allows McLaren to use less material at the top of the car, contributing to an overall lighter structure.
The most intriguing update, however, might be the engine cover and side pod, which many are speculating could be a reworked version of McLaren's "zero pod" concept. The engine cover is noticeably narrower than before, contributing to a sleeker profile. Additionally, McLaren has introduced a taller vertical wing in the cockpit area, designed to reduce turbulent airflow coming off the car's rear. They've also added more wing elements under the mirrors, a design element that echoes Mercedes' approach.

Stella has made it clear that the team aimed for a bold, innovative direction with this car: "We took a relatively challenging approach in terms of the level of innovation in this car."
Aiming for the Top
After clinching the Constructors' Championship in 2024, McLaren is now focused on defending their position at the top of the grid. Will they be able to fend off the relentless challenge from Max Verstappen and Red Bull, or will another team close the gap? The true performance of the MCL-39 will become clearer after the Bahrain test, where McLaren's new car will first be put through its paces under competitive conditions.
